Shaping Places for Healthier Lives
We need to test two assumptions
People’s health is strongly determined by the social, economic, commercial and environmental conditions of where they are born, grow, live, work and age. These ‘wider determinants’ of health have complex interrelationships and influences on the health and wellbeing of populations in a particular place.
The focus for this project will aim to understand the impact of internal air pollution and associated adverse health in child health outcomes. The COVID-19 pandemic reinforced the important relationship between pollution and population health. The heightened awareness around the exposure to air pollution can increase vulnerability to the disease. With more knowledge of the virus, we can understand the significance of healthy internal air and adequate ventilation in preventing the spread of the virus.
B&D has the 6th highest rate of asthma-related hospital admissions in London - this issue alone has brought on attraction from partners across B&D (including housing, Inclusive Growth within the council and health partners). This is impacted by the following:
- Air pollution
- Childhood excess weight
- Internal air quality
- Housing quality
- Fuel poverty
- Healthcare access
